Windows 10 Keeps Checking For Updates

I opened up Services and stopped Windows Update. 'Checking for updates' stopped instantly and the install process moved along. After a pc check or something and a section requiring you to 'Accept' the terms etc, 'Checking for updates' began again with a% counter. It started out ok but stayed at 3% with no real network activity. I waited a few minutes and stopped the update service again. It jumped to 11%.

I re-started the update service (don't think I needed to) and it moved through in a few seconds. I was soon at the install phase and everything went fine.So the answer seems to be to stop the update service if at any point it seems stuck. The installer didn't shut down or anything. It is possible that Windows 7 is also trying to check for updates which can take forever with a clean install.

Even if it's SP1, trust me, I ran into this yesterday. So see if Windows update is running (I believe it's wuauclt.exe in 7) and if that one is using your processing power. If Win7 is indeed checking for updates and it takes forever, and you have SP1 installed already, you can try the following fix.It worked for me, Win7 was taking forever to check for updates, making it impossible for the upgrade to also check. So I installed that fix, restarted and Win7 was done within I think 10 minutes or something. This enabled the upgrade to finally see if it needs any upgrades. But once again, if Win7 isn't checking itself and taking forever, I don't think this will help. How long are you letting it run though before stopping?
