We are lifelong Totoro and Miyazaki fans. We've visited Hayao Miyzaki's museum in Mitaka, Japan, have a ton of Totoro memorabilia, and even costumed our kids as Totoros last Halloween.We have watched Totoro probably 100 times or more, and like any other Miyazaki aficionados, we purchase each new media or new version. We purchased this DVD version (and still need to buy the Bluray as we purchased a Samsung player recently).First, the good - it's great this version contains the original japanese track. You can hear the original character voices and dialogue intonation as Miyazaki envisioned it. Obviously there is a lot of Japanese cultural aspects to this.

Second only to 'Spirited Away,' this is a household staple standing out in a sea of viewing options.As adapted by Miyazaki from the book by Diana Wynne Jones, Howl (voice of Christian Bale) is a melancholy young wizard (considered a heartthrob by some of the book's fans) who lives in a castle with doors that open into completely different locales. A young boy and a fire spirit (Billy Crystal) are among his few companions.Into his life comes Sophie (Emily Mortimer), a young haberdasher transformed into an old woman (Jean Simmons) by the selfish, corpulent Witch of the Waste (Lauren Bacall, voicing her second animated role).

Howl's Moving Castle' is a spectacular viewing experience, rich in sweeping panoramas and astonishing detail, even for. My son recently started collecting the Miyazaki films on blu ray and I've had the pleasure of viewing them with him the last few days. When my children were much younger, I had purchased Totoro for them and we all enjoyed that film for years as a family.and we still do. Naussica, Castle In The Sky, Spirited Away, and his entire body of work is breathtaking in their own right. However, for my money, I'd have to say Ponyo is his most visually stunning film. The colors are a feast for the eyes (moreso on blu ray) and while this may be yet another reimagining of 'The Little Mermaid' story, it is an incredibly sweet and charming tale.My children are now young adults and even though they show little to no interest in the Disney fare of their youth, they still love the Miyazaki films.and with good reason.
Somehow, Miyazaki. Those words give Porco Rosso, the 'Red Pig', carte blanche to act in ways that Marco Berlini (his former self) couldn't. On the surface, that means mercenary and amoral.Sort of like Bogart in 'Casa Blanca' or 'To Have and to Have Not.' In other words, nothing you could easily sum up in just a few words, and he likes it that way.
It helps the new guys underestimate him, just the way he wants. Also like Bogart, Rosso lives in a time and a place just outside of active war, and just outside any jurisdiction that would take an active interest in him. And again like Bogart, he enters that un-war, on no side but his own, and wins what he wanted to win.This isn't an animated copycat, though. It's Miyazaki's story all through, built around a romantic passion for flying and around strong, young female characters. In this case.
Shawn (David Henrie) is a sick boy who is spending a week at his grandmother's house because his own parents are too busy to tend to him. This house is inhabited by a family borrowers, human-like creatures only a few inches tall that reside under the floorboards.
They get their name from their need to 'borrow' supplies from the human residents in order to survive. However, they must never be seen in order to avoid the attention. Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler) is a teenage borrower who lives in the house with her parents that is inadvertently spotted by Shawn. Her parents are concerned about this, but she wonders if humans are really that bad.When it comes to a Ghibli film, it generally goes without saying that there is some great animation. However, this film really stands out.
It is really impressive the amount of detail they put into everything which includes. By far my favorite movie by Hayao Miyazaki. Most people I know enjoy ether My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's delivery sevice, or Spirited away, and while I still think those movies are good, I think Miyazaki shines at his epics. Storys of far off places and magical/mystical elements.

My favorites by him are Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and Howls Moving Castle. This movie is another masterpiece by him in terms of art, story, and characters. My only nitpick is that the english voice cast does not sound as good as some of his other ones like Castle in the Sky, or Nausica Valley of the wind. Overall though this is an amazing movie and you owe it to your self to go and watch it. Make sure to pay attention to the themes of the movie and see what you can pick out. This is one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies.
I already had a copy as part of a third-party licensed Ghibli collection, but wanted a better transfer. The colors are crisp and gorgeous and the animation is wonderful. I did notice that this movie has some differences from my other copy, but nothing that changes the plot or characters, it just struck us as we watched.This is one of my daughter's favorites as well, and I highly recommend it for just about any age. There are no scary monsters or mean people. Kiki, a 13-year-old witch, must leave home for a year to train on her own.
So she does, with her cat Jiji, and after a bumpy start settles into a seaside town. It's a coming-of-age story with elements which most people can likely relate to - feeling like an outsider; wondering what is special about you; wondering how. You can read about this movie eveywhere else, so Im focused on the bluray edition here.Details, colors and motion are flawless. In the previous release I had, many of the darker scenes were a muddy mess, highlights were blown out and colors inconsistent. This BR from Disney is as close you'll get to the actual animation cels.
Dungeons and dragons monster. Simply stunning. Nausicaa's light trousers and her skintone are finally distinct enough, you wont be asking if she's soaring without pants.:-)The stereo soundtrack uses the full dynamic range, so youll be riding the volume up and down A LOT.
The noisier scenes pack a wollop and the quieter passages you'll need to turn up a bit. Playing this through a proper stereo is a must - tiny flatscreen tv speakers cant keep up.The extras are easily ignored fluff. Aside from the unique 'storyboard' that shows each major scene establishing sketch. This film contains the imagination and style of all (most) Ghibli films. The plot and pace is not one of the studio's best, but they still manage to keep the viewer engaged. Such an outlandish plot with a deep emotional core is a specialty for Studio Ghibli.
In the case of 'The Cat Returns' they do not tug at your heart strings often, but prove that they can in bits an pieces throughout the movie; conclusion especially.It's not Spirited Away, but any negatives are outweighed for Ghibli fans because the entire production is an Easter egg for a movie they made 7 years earlier! Up Front, I am a fan of all things Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki. I will admit that Castle in the Sky may not be his best, or the studio’s most beautiful, but this is the action adventure movie for which I have been waiting since I was 8. Given that according to my wife I am still 8, perhaps not a long time.Miyazaki grabs your attention at the start with an attack on an airship by a group of sky pirates on steampunk wigged insect flying machines. A girl, flees the approaching marauders by thumping her adult, stealing a necklace and falling to what has to be her death. Cut to credits. Comon this is classic adventure movie and better than a just a cliff hanger.We have armored trains, dangerous mines, more dangerous flying, sympathetic robots, treasure and magic crystals. The romance between young boy and girl is properly.
I don't know how I missed watching this movie of all the studio ghibli films. But I'm happy I have it in my collection now.
It's become probably one of my top favorites. It's so sweet yet corny.
It makes me giggle like a little 12 year old and I'm 22. It's a very heartfelt film about two teens trying to figure out what they should do with their lives. They pursue their dreams and find out it's better to finish their schooling. And at the same time they fall in love. A wonderful innocent romance.
A MUST have for anyone who loves Studio Ghibli.You won't regret it I promise.I love this movie! I understand that Miyazaki Goro and his father don't get along too well. I've also seen it written that this story was not up to Hayao's standards.Well, I own everything he has on the market and I'm here to tell you that Goro is his father's son and there's very little that Hayao has made that is of the quality of 'Tales from Earthsea'.The modern anime seems to be drifting into some sort of confused, artistic, fractured and staggering art form instead of staying what it should be - a story with a beginning, middle and ending. 'Tales from Earthsea' may not be what Ursula K.
Le Guin would envision her work to be but it is nevertheless a good representation.I recommend Goro's work and I think that when his father is no longer producing his ever improving work, Goro will pick up from there and advance it even further. The English-dubbed soundtrack plays flawlessly, but the original Japanese one has a problem: parts of it can be inaudible except, perhaps, with a top-of-the-line sound system.I watched with my PC hooked-up to a large-screen monitor with a simple stereo two-channel audio output. Parts of the soundtrack were clearly missing: a voice-over at the very beginning, and a song after the end titles; who knows what else, as well. I could tell, because the words appeared in the English sub-titles, but there was no sound. I have never encountered this sort of problem before, even though I have a fairly large collection of movies and TV shows.Now, my take on the movie:It is meant for older teens and adults; it will be probably boring for children.A film mostly about the details and patterns of daily life, thoughtfully and carefully shown in a mostly plain, but now and then gorgeous, animation style.
